I believe I found the place you got the sentence from (I go there frequently) and it doesn't appear to have a metophorical usage. They took a literal translation approach to the sentence:
The experiments were carried out in/on/with an apple/apples.
The context was lab work. I don't know what experiments were performed. I just eat them.

Tomisimo June 18, 2008, 08:02 AM In Mexico, I think the most common term is manzana de Adán. Another slang term I've heard is gañote, which can refer to both the Adam's apple or the throat. :)
