I am using the app Duolingo, I should translate the sentence:
"My sister looks like my mother"
I wrote:
Mi hermana parece como mi madre
But the correct sentence used luce instead of parece.
What's the difference?

I'd go with parecer. As far as I know lucir means to shine and I've never heard it in a sentence like yours.

But luce was right, I used parecer first - it was wrong. :-( Too bad.

Parece = seems

luce = looks

Would that help?

I don't see why "parece" would be wrong.

Then, I guess, both can be right. Luce = looks makes sense, too.
¡Gracias!

Hmmmm. That's kind of weird. I would have chose parecer, as well.

I mainly use luce with food and sometimes people.

Ex: El flan luce bien. - The flan looks good.

I use parecerse in comparison to people ect.

Ex: Te pareces a tu hermano. - You look like your brother.

Hmm.... Now that I think about it. I think your first choice is wrong because of how it was writtin. I'm pretty sure to say, "My sister looks like my mother." would be "Mi hermana, se parece a mi madre" I'm almost certain that's how you would write that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong.Both parecer and parecerse can be used. One is a linking verb. The other is pronominal. They have different meanings.

I'm not saying the that's wrong, but It doesn't sound or seem right to me. Doesn't sound right. It may to others, but for me, personally, it doesn't.

I'd prefer to say, "That flan looks good." Sounds better, in my opinion.
