View Full Version : Sit on a Pin
Jessica March 15, 2009, 08:34 AM My mom and little brother found this in a book they were reading. They asked me and my older brother what this sentence meant:
"Sit on a pin."
I wasn't sure if it actually had a meaning. I think it means just to sit on a pin.
Is it an idiom? If there is a meaning, what is it?

May be it refers to someone playing a joke on someone else and put a pin on the seat, so when the person sits he/she will be stung? :wicked:
Rusty March 15, 2009, 11:15 PM We need the context, not just the phrase. This phrase could be literal or figurative.
Tomisimo March 16, 2009, 12:48 AM It might be a reference to being "on pins and needles (http://www.tomisimo.org/idioms/en/to-be-on-pins-and-needles-3708.html)", which means you're very anxious or excited about something.
Jessica March 16, 2009, 06:57 PM ok let me get the book with it. then you can see what it means.
I can't find the book. I remember some of it....it's in book about a wolf's side of the story of the Three Little Pigs.
it's someting like this.....
"And your granny can sit on a pin!"
I don't think this is enough though. I will continue to look for the book.
Rusty March 16, 2009, 07:41 PM The book is called The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by A. Wolf, by Jon Sciezka
Telling someone to sit on a pin is not very nice. There are worse ways to say the same thing, but it's rude at any rate.
Fazor March 17, 2009, 09:10 AM Yeah, sounds like it's just a "cute" way of saying something mean. Reminds me of something the Fonz would say on Happy Days.
Elaina March 17, 2009, 09:18 AM I'm not really naive or anything like that but I am truly confused. I know what the Fonz says or would say but not truly sure what "sit on a pin" means.
:o:o
Rusty March 17, 2009, 09:28 AM This is a put-down. Any zinger would do, I suppose.
Here are some others:
Go stick your head in the oven.
Go jump in a lake.
Go soak your head.
Sit on it and spin/rotate.
Here's a more current put-down:
Kiss my ____.
