We call these questions Byzantine discussions (I don't know if it's the same in English). But a well done question would be with a hen, not with a chicken (up till now, nobody knows a chicken which had laid an egg.

Scientifics gave the answer years ago: first it was the egg. At first, the egg is a single-cell organism (it'll have time to evolve later); a hen is a multicellular organism. To get a multicellular organism we need to fertilize that hen ovule so it can be turned into several cells, taking place the being called hen. Following the evolution theory, when the first hen was born after several evolutional stages, she came out from an egg.

Therefore: first it was the egg and long, very loooooong before, the bacterium.

There is wisdom here. Hens have evolved from other birds, and before that from reptiles, all of which laid eggs. Therefore eggs came long before chickens QED.
