hace, eh?

I was doing some Spanish exercises when I stumbled upon this sentence:

"Estoy usando una bufanda porque hace frío."

I don't really know how this should be translated. As far as I know, hace, can be either third-person singular of the verb, hacer, or be used in statements with time. And I can't seem to apply any of these two options to the current sentence.

Could somebody help me out?

Estoy usando una bufanda porque hace frío.
I'm wearing a scarf because it's cold (out).

hacer frío = to be cold (weather)
tener frío = to be cold (a person)

¡Gracias, Tomísimo, ahora entiendo!
