When you translate "How far away" into spanish it is Que tan lejos. Why do we put "tan" before lejos and what role or rule does it follow?

How far away has two different meanings. When you wish to express amazement at the distance tan should be used. ¡Tan lejos!
I you wasnt to know the distance between two places like how far away is New York from Philadelphia you may say: ¿Cual es la distancia entre Nueva York y Philadephia?

"¿qué tan lejos?" is used in Mexico and maybe Central America.

"¿qué tanto?" is an adverbial phrase typical from Mexico that means "¿cuánto?"

Both sound colloquial to me.

It's not a colloquial structure.

A literary alternative could be "¿Cuán lejos...?".

Acepto como habla no coloquial -y uso- cualquier combinación de "que tan(to)" que llegue hasta la asignación de grado o como ponderación, pero como medida está haciendo funcionar "tan lejos" (adverbio + adjetivo) como si fuera un sustantivo.

"Habrá que ver qué tan valiente es ...":good:
"Depende de qué tan despabilado sea ... ":good:
"¿qué tan lejos?":thinking:

El hecho de que los doblajes mexicanos -con sus elotes, betabeles, pláticas y changos-, que son un ejemplo de juicioso equilibrio, omitan en general este uso es señal de que se lo percibe anómalo al menos en la mitad de la América hispana.

In my own opinion the tan word into the Spanish for say a address so long or sometimes the address are distances very far way and it's not very closer of you.

Then in my example I'll use the tan word likes an example very simple.

Supongo que esta tan solo a 3 kilometros de aquí.
