Salir al paso

Hi everyone

What does "salir al paso" mean in the following context?

I've seen it translated as "refute", but that doesn't quite sound right here.

I think "take exception to" would sound better. Would that be a correct translation?

Thanks

It’s kind of find the right answer

@Dupond: it's like to cut off, to stop short. He disliked the question and he dismissed it.
