This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 6, 2009
ladrillo (masculine noun (el)) — brick. Look up ladrillo in the dictionary Vivo en una casa de ladrillo. I live in a brick house. |
If you say Este libro es un ladrillo, you mean it's heavy-going,boring,horrible...:yuck:

|
In Mexico the houses that are in the hills are completely built of bricks..
They keep the hot inside of the house so people can be completely nice a toasty. |
(' Zakken als een baksteen') - Hundirse como un ladrillo (to sink like a brick) ('Zinken als een baksteen'). :) |

I believe I have heard Me cayo mál como un ladrillo which is similar to the English: It landed in my stomach like a brick. |

E.g. ' Ik heb hem opgetrokken' - I have pulled him up. ' Ik ben met hem opgetrokken' - I have hung around with him ' Het is voorgekomen ' - It has happened. ' Hij kwam voor' - He appeared before the judge ' Hij voorkwam het/ Hij heeft het voorkomen' - He (has) prevented it :) Thanks for the expression in Spanish! :) Quote:
' De regen komt met bakstenen uit de lucht vallen' ('The rain is falling from the sky like bricks') You could also say : 'Het regent pijpestelen' or ' Het regent dat het giet' (It rains that it pours, it' s pouring rain) or ' Het komt met bakken uit de lucht' (it' s falling from the sky with trays (of water)' :) |

Quote:
Een lekkerbekje is trouwens een populair soort vis (kabeljauw (cod)/pangasius). ;) Beetje 'fish 'n chips' achtig.

;) ¿Uds. no? :) |
Sí ,sí esto utilizamos también ;) :D

Does anyone else use tabique to mean brick as well?
|
In Mexico, "tabique" and "ladrillo" are often synonyms.

Not in Chile. Tabique is a thin wall. |
In Spain tabique is a wall. I would say a wall that separates two rooms in a house, but maybe I'm making it up.
|
Quote:
Tabique is used for smaller walls, less high or separating walls within a structure, and 'pared' for larger, thicker (outer) walls that actually support a structure? :) |

In Chile we don't use the word tabique as much as pared (interior vs exterior). |
