Difference between "anotación", "nota" and "apunte"?

What is the difference between these words? My dictionary gives them all as options for the English word "note" (to make a note of something, as in "to help you remember something")

En el sentido de "note" son bastante sinónimos... Tienen usos distintos, pero en ese coinciden.

I think that "anotación" and "nota" are for something really brief, for example, a phone number or an arrangement, and "apunte" is for example when you take notes in class, though I am not sure of this, this is only what I think :(
