Haber and tener can both be translated as "to have" in English, but their usage is not interchangeable.

Use tener when you are talking about having or possessing something. Use haber to form the perfect and pluperfect tenses. Tener is an actual meaningful verb (the word carries meaning), and haber is a helping verb.

Tengo gripa = I have a cold
Tengo dinero = I have money
Tengo coche = I have a car

He leído el libro = I have read the book
Habías ido = You had gone
Hubiera cantado = I should have sung
