Plancha

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 9, 2008

plancha -feminine noun (la), iron. Look up plancha in the dictionary

No pude salir a cenar anoche porque la plancha no prendía y toda mi ropa estaba arrugada.
I couldn't go out to eat last night because the iron wouldn't turn on and all my clothes were wrinkled.

Para comer quiero una ensalada y unas gambas a la plancha :D

For anyone who doesn't know, planchando oreja or planchando la oreja means sleeping (or laying down).

Also a large grill can be referred to as a plancha. ¿Qué son gambas? :)

On this side of the Atlantic gambas are camarones.

Camarones over here are the really tiny ones.Shrimps? Or maybe shrimps are gambas and prawns langostinos?

En este lado del charco decimos shrimp para los camarones. Nunca he oido gambas antes de hoy, así que debe ser una palabra que sólo se usa en España.
(The majority of us here in the U.S. use shrimp as both singular and plural in formation.)
Prawns son langostinos por estas partes.

Then maybe scampi is the right word for gambas...

Scampi is a shrimp dish, where the shrimp is usually fried in butter (or olive oil) and garlic.
Here's a picture.

Scampi can also be made with chicken, so scampi is just the preparation name.
