Sound out words

How do you say in Spanish, to sound out words? When a child is learning to read, he should learn how to pronounce each letter and then use that knowledge to sound out words that he hasn't learned yet.

Example, "snap" S-n-a-p, and then he says it faster until he recognizes the word.

Thanks, Poli. I decided to translate it (within the sentence I had): vocalizar, es decir, articular fonéticamente las palabras.
