Se Me Olvidó ...

People,

I have always used the structure "se me olvidó", as an examle, "Se me olvidaron las llaves".

But recently I heard "Me olvidó de". "se" has been dropped, and "de" has been introduced.

Are they both valid? Any comments?

The first is used when the speaker assumes no blame for the incident. This is called the no-fault usage of 'se.'

The second should be me olvido de, me olvidé de, or some other first-person conjugation (since the reflexive pronoun is me). Here the speaker is admitting to forgetting something.

Rusty,

Yes, it was "me olvidé de".

You have explained it well, confusion cleared.

Thanks!

Dean
