Suck away

CAn anybody give a synonym for this sentence:
We saw the sea sucked away and apparently forced back by an earthquaque-:thinking:

Esas palabras tratan de ilustrar el efecto de un tsunami or maremoto. Aparentamente el agua de la playa está chupado por el maremoto y poco después vuelve con un azote tremendo.
