Pez

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for October 26, 2008

pez - masculine noun (el) - fish. Look up pez in the dictionary

¿Cuál es la diferencia más importante entre un pez y un mamífero?
What is the main difference between a fish and a mammal?

muy facil :) mammals have fur and breathe with lungs. Mothers have milk and take care of their young.
fish have scales and have gills. They lay eggs and most don't take care of their young.

Pez is also a kind of tar used to cover wood when building a boat. With that meaning it is feminine.
It's also my grandma's family name :-)

really? cool :)

It's easy because the fish live inside of water and the mammal does not live inside of water, hi live upon the earth.

There are also marine mammals :) dolphins and whales ^^ however, though they live in the water like fish, they have lungs and need to come to the surface to breathe. :)

One thing I've never been good at is names of sea fish (in English).

Boquerón, merluza, besugo, pescada, (the ones that often make it to the table), salmonete...

mmmmmmmm getting hungry! :)

lol
fish: salmon, bass, perch, etc, and yes the ones that make it to the table :)

Siempre me gustaba la palabra huachinango. :)

Is there a formula or equation "they" use to come up with marine life names?

Some of the names are wacky in English and Spanish!
