Fichar por
I think it means to sign up with. It appears to be a term that is related to players signing up with a team. Is it exclusively a sports term? Is it strictly an Iberian term?

Yes, indeed.
lo fichó el FC Barcelona — he was signed (up) by FC Barcelona Fichar por alguien - un club o una compañía o empresa - to join somebody, some club, some company... It is an Iberian term, mainly. In CREA, I found it is used in Colombia, Salvador and Bolivia, but probably relating to Spain news, or Spain teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc.) Saludos, Poli. |
