Con permiso???
 

I am listening through some videos that someone here at Tomisimo introduced me to at the website for the University of Texas at Laredo. For each video, someone from a Spanish speaking country talks for a minute or two, and what they say is also shown as text in Spanish next to the video. It has done WONDERS for my listening skills!!

Anyway - I was just listening to one of the videos and the transcript of what the woman said follows:

"En América latina para presentar una persona a otra lo más apropiado es decir, "mira, Juan, te presento a mi amiga Lisa". Lisa extiende su mano y dice, "mucho gusto Juan, encantada". Eso es lo más común. Si es una persona mayor siempre hay que hablar de usted, no de tu. Si es una persona de la misma edad entonces se puede ser más informal, más relajado y sólo, "¡Ah Yola! ¿Qué tal? mucho gusto." Siempre se suele contestar "encantado, mucho gusto de conocer" a la persona. Lo mismo cuando uno se va a ir de una casa. Se dice, "gracias, con permiso, me dio gusto estar aquí". Cuando una persona llega a una casa es muy común que la persona, el dueño de la casa le diga, "pasa, estás en tu casa. Esta es tu casa." Hacer énfasis decirle que se sienta como en su casa. Y eso es lo más común en América latina."

I have a question about why one would say "con permiso" when visiting someone's home. I know you say "con permiso" when you need someone to move out of your way (right?), but I don't understand it in context here. Help....... :)

This is one of the ways to show, in an expected, polite way, that you're on your way out. You are asking permission to leave. This can be an awkward time, because no host wants their guests to leave and they can get very offended if you don't ask right.

It's like saying "will you excuse me". :)

Si la persona es mayor o aunque sea de la misma edad, se le trata de usted hasta obtener más familiaridad con esa persona.


Esto me suena mal. Lo mejor es decir, "me dió gusto conocerlo,a" etc...
