Algunos errores en mis composiciones
Hola,
4. Quiero decir algo como "...there is always someone who has it better than you." |

For the last one, I would write something like "There will always be someone that lives better than you," or "There will always be someone that has more than you." To make either sentence grammatically correct, you'll need to use the subjunctive mood in the secondary clause. Have you learned the subjunctive mood? |

En la tercera frase no sé exactamente que es lo que quieres decir, but it seem's to me that the original sentece must be something like "One day, George was given a dangerous work". It's not so easy to translate this into Spanish. Try with "One day, they gave George a dangerous work". Try with "There is always somebody who has it easier than you". |

En la tercera frase, quiero decir "One day, Jorge was given a dangerous job." |

The English passive voice is very flexible. One can choose either the direct object or the indirect object as the passive subject. Both of these sentences are perfectly acceptable English: a. "Jorge was give a dangerous job." (indirect object as subject) b. "A dangerous job was give to Jorge." (direct object as subject) The Spanish passive with 'ser' is much less flexible than the English passive: one can use ONLY the DIRECT OBJECT as the subject. The indirect object of an active voice sentence is forbidden as the subject of a passive voice sentence. Translating sentence 'b' using the passive with 'ser' gives us: "A Jorge le fue dado un trabajo peligroso." As micho says, it is more common to express this using the passive with 'se'. |
