Canica

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for April 21, 2009

canica (feminine noun (la)) — marble. Look up canica in the dictionary

De niño, jugaba yo canicas.
As a child, I played marbles.

María José April 21, 2009 03:13 AM

I would say: De niño, jugaba a las canicas

Jessica April 21, 2009 05:25 AM

I think you may be confusing the marble which is the little round (often glass) balls that children play with and collect with its homonym marble the stone.
A marble table in Spanish is una mesa de marmol. Caneca is a word that
may not have an adjective form unless you are very creative with language.

It's not an adjective, but an expression

for a coward
"tienes los huevos como dos canicas" :D
you balls are so big as two marbles...

Saludos :D

Volverse loco se puede decir lose your marbles en inglés. Es un dicho común.

As would I :( The DailyWordBot was very sleepy when he entered the word last night. :o

AngelicaDeAlquezar April 21, 2009 09:16 AM

@David: In Mexico we say "jugar canicas". ;)

And slang about something very old: "Eso es del año de la canica".

Pues yo diría que "niño" es adjetivo. "De niño" creo que es un complemento predicativo compuesto por una preposición y un adjetivo (que sería un sintagma adjetival). Pero hace ya tiempo que lo estudié y no lo recuerdo mucho.
