"Deseó" may be fine if the wish of this person died before he could be in condition to accomplish it or if you're considering a one-moment situation. If you mean that his long time wish was to make a living as a painter, then "
deseaba" would be better: he wanted to live as a painter, until his step-father ruined his plans.
