3. You can use thin-layer chromatography for a lot of things in the forensic field, like ink examination- determining what kind of pen was used to write something found at a crime scene. You can use it to help identify drugs such as heroin and quinine. Helps to identify petroleum product as well. the method is so sensitive that you can use less than 100 micrograms of suspect material for such comparisons. Most of what happens when components separate is colorless, our eyes can't see it, but if you shine ultraviolet light on it, it [the components] will appear.
