El verbo
tropezarse significa
to bump into o
to run into (encontrarse casualmente).
Por ejemplo:

to trip on/over (dar con los pies en un obstáculo al ir andando, con lo que se puede caer).

So, yes, I believe this works. It can be translated as 'I trip/stumble on/over the small words.' I think the same can be said without using the reflexive form. Others will be able to verify for certain.
