My grandfather, who fought in the Spanish war, was a self-made man with no formal studies, a really good cabinet-maker, very intelligent (if I may say so myself
), who learnt French without any previous knowledge while in a concentration camp, read widely... AND WAS THE BEST GRAMPS EVER, if a bit too temperamental, used to say when he was young, never in front of us kids, I learnt this from my Mum)
