Following on Rusty's comments about "kitty": I know of one other related use in the context of playing a specific card game that I know as "cribbage". This game involves dealing a specified number of cards to each player, then having each player remove a specified number of cards from their hand; all of the removed cards are collected and set aside as a group, and that collection of cards is called "the kitty". Card play starts after all players make their contribution of cards to the kitty.
At the end of the round, the dealer for that round has the privilege of retrieving the kitty and evaluating the cards for combinations that grant additional points toward achieving a winning score.
The concept of "everyone contributes, one person benefits" is the defining feature that relates the use of "kitty" as monetary contributions to the use of "kitty" in this card game.
