Yes, you could. According to my wife in the background, the difference between them is very subtle. So subtle in fact that she can't define it.
I think they can be used interchangeably.
By the way, there used to be just
football in England, until the school of Rugby invented a variation of football involving cheating by holding the ball in your hand, and much more violence. This was known as
Rugby football, then just
Rugby. The original football was known as
Association Football, and
Association was later shortened to
Soccer. That's one theory, anyway, and who cares?
