broma - feminine noun (la) - joke, practical joke, prank, jest. Look up broma in the dictionary

Me hicieron una broma pesada y la verdad, me enojé.
They played a mean practical joke on me and to be honest, I got angry.
Why the machine translator uses the word played when in translate at Spanish is me hicieron. I guess that it should to be (They make me a joke), or (They did me a joke).

I though that play were jugar.
