Side dishes are food that is served in addition to the main entree for the meal. For example, you might have a steak as the main item, and side dishes of corn, potatoes, beans, salad, etc. In another thread, someone mentioned that side dishes are called
acompañamientos, I asked another native speaker, and she said they are called
guarniciones (false cognate to
garnish?). "Side dish" can also be shortened to "side", for example, in a restaurant, you might ask for some mashed potatoes to go with whatever else you ordered by asking "may I have a side of mashed potatoes?".
So, how do you say "side dish" in Spanish?
In the following picture, the entree (main dish) is a steak. The side dishes (or sides) are fried mushrooms, corn on the cob, and roasted potatoes.
