The book is correct, Irma, except that surely it must be "if I
were married to J", but that's not the issue.
You could say "if J and I were married"
I am going to marry Mary
I am getting married to Mary
Mary and I are going to be married
Mary and I are getting married
I am married to Mary
Mary is married to me
I am not married to Fred
Fred is not maried to me.
Does that help?
