When learning Spanish, I thought knowing some Latin would be useful. Unfortunately, classical Latin vocabulary is not much use, because a lot of Spanish vocabulary is from Vulgar Latin. For example you might think that the Spanish for
farm would come from Latin
ager. But no,
granja from Medieval Latin
granica, or
finca from Vulgar Latin, and so on.
