We use the term kitty (or pot or ante) in card games (like poker). The money contributed to the pot (kitty) is yours if you win the hand. We can also use kitty to describe any money that is contributed by a group of people which is set aside for a particular purpose. We also call this a pool (or a pot).
A group of people chip in (pool, contribute towards, throws in the pot) to purchase a costly item for another. When the hope is to win the contributed amount, however, we tend to call it a pool, a pot or a kitty (not necessarily in that order).
