While this is generally true for large areas of the US, it is not uniformly true. For example, I have a number of relatives that live in or near one of the beach resorts in New Hampshire and southern Maine, where during the summer tourist season the best second language to know by far is Québecois French. That said, in some other areas of New England Spanish is indeed the most-widely-spoken language other than English.
