When is 'lo' used in Spanish?

Can 'lo' (it) be used when the sentence involves an action being done to a non-living object or an action being done to a living object? With what verbs can 'lo' be used?

For instance, can I say:

"Ella pregunta dónde está la Giralda." = "Ella lo pregunta."

"Ellos invitan a Maria a tomar un copa." = "Ellos lo invitan/"

?
