Thoughts on Portuguese
After I'd become fairly proficient in Spanish I decided to have a crack at Portuguese. At first it wasn't too dificult but you do have to remember which words are the same, which change slightly and which are totally diferent, e.g. jardim (slight), janela (totally).
Then I found the pronouns dificult, and the subjunctive is worse than Spanish. Although gostar is more like the English to like than the Spanish gustar which comes out more like to be pleased by in English, but you still have to remember the diference though.
What did surprise me though was that when I watched two different TV documentaries on indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest their Portuguese was more intelligible than that of Lisbon or Rio de Janeiro!
