Hola de Mexico
I have a passport from the United States, but I am a permanent resident of Mexico (visa status). I have been a serious student of Spanish since about 2011. It is a high priority for me, so I study every day. More importantly, I speak and communicate in writing much more in Spanish than English each day. I live with a Columbian woman who speaks no English.
My Spanish is far from fluent, but I can communicate using proper Spanish grammar. My comprehension is my weakness. For example, I have a hard time understanding television with my old ears, and I am just now beginning to understand much of what I hear on the radio (because it's very repetitive, and the persons broadcasting generally have exceptionally clear voices).
For those just starting in Spanish, i want to say that learning a second language is one of the most rewarding things that I've done. Language is the only door to a culture. Without it, you will never understand what a people thinks, which is the essence of its culture.
