In both of your phrases, the words 'it' and 'the place' reference the same thing. Therefore, there's no real need to have two translations. However, if you use 'the place', the word 'basic' would be 'sencillo'. The ending of the adjective agrees in gender with the masculine Spanish equivalent of the noun 'place'.
The English subject pronoun 'it' is never translated into Spanish. However, the subject 'place' would need to be translated. So, you either need or don't need a subject, and the linking verb is the same.
