One of the translations of the present simple tense 'leo' is "I am reading." There are actually four possible translations of the Spanish present simple tense into English.

The present simple tense 'leo' can be translated as:
I read
I do read
I am reading
I'll read (near future)

English-speaking learners of Spanish overuse the present progressive. It is generally used only to describe the very act of doing something.
The other tenses of estar can be used to indicate the continuous nature of the action.
Ella está hablando = She is (currently) speaking
Ella estaba hablando = She was speaking (on-going, in progress)
