English prescribes the use of 'who' when the antecedent is a person. This is not the case in Spanish.
The friend who gave you a ride. = The friend that gave you a ride.
'Who' is what you meant, by the way. 'Whom' is used where an object goes (accusative, dative, and prepositional cases), where 'him' or 'her' could also appear, as in "The friend whom I saw you with."
(That said, the proper use of 'whom' is rapidly disappearing in colloquial American English.)
