Translation practice
Hola. No he estado practicando y realmente debo hacerlo.

Edit: Alec responded below about the past tense, and I didn't catch the wrong usage. When you believe something (creer), you don't use the subjunctive. You are simply stating belief. No creer is when doubt is expressed, and this takes the subjunctive. Última edición por Rusty fecha: August 27, 2011 a las 08:19 AM Razón: edited in view of Alec's comments |

Mientras tanto, brigadas de bomberos apoyadas por helicópteros hidrantes continuaban combatiendo las llamas en toda el área de Dustyhilly Valley y Overrated Hills, y expresaron satisfacción al declarar que el siniestro estaba ya casi controlado en Notsobrownish Canyon, Nothinglefttoburn and Reseca Vista." se incendió ---> it bursted into flames -it's over, no matter it is still burning or not ardÃa --> it was burning -not account of if it has ended and how- I hope you enjoy that preterite galore and find it useful. Don't forget a piece of news is also storytelling.

I wouldn't use the word 'práctica' in this case, although I would use it for another kind of 'practises'. |

Could you pleae help me see if I correctly understood some parts of it? The hardworking public servants evacuated from facilities (buildings?) to the calm (?) and the nice looters who had begun to gather in the parking lot. There is only worry about the night watchman's cat (???) The last time she was seen, a firefighter was trying to remove the feline's claws from his scalp. I look forward to seeing how far off I was on those. I think I got the rest. I'm going to try another exercise in translating an article for the sake of practicing imperfect/preterite. Thanks again. Cita:
Thank you for the corrections.

The (brave and hardworking) public servants evacuated from the (facilities/premises/block) (both) the night watchman and the (group) of nice looters who had begun to gather in the parking lot. The rest is OK, but there are a bunch of subtleties and collocations in English that I'm not aware of. For instance "temer por (el destino de)" is something that I can't imagine it is render using "worry" as I perceive English as la language that crunches the emotional content of things -a language that considers emotions to be too emotional, just emotional and reason-benumbing-. I would instinctively think that "deep concern" (or something similar) was shown for the loose end of not having ascertained the whereabouts of the cat -and strong enough to keep the humorous touch-.

I find this a thought-provoking reaction. By 'crunches' did you mean to say 'crushes' such as, for example, by the heel of a boot? As though to say that English crushes the life out of literature's emotional content?
