You've Got the Wrong Man ...
People,
How would you say "You've got the wrong man" in Spanish. You know, like if someone says "you're blaming Yoko Ono for the breakup of The Beatles, but there were problems before she ever came along. You've got the wrong person! Thanks in advance, Silopanna/Dean |

Cogiste el hombre equivocado.
In some countries coger is a no-no. You can use pillaste instead.

I agree with Poli, but I'll add a note:
"Pillar" is a verb mostly used in Spain. In Mexico, for example, we'd never use that. "Coger", is a no-no in Mexico, and we might use "atrapar" or "agarrar" instead. All of these verbs are synonymous, but only when you mean "to seize", "to grab", "to catch". In the case of your example, we'd prefer another construction like "te equivocaste de persona", or something more explicit like "estás culpando a la persona equivocada".

Angelica,
Thinking it over again, I feel that your suggestion sounds very native-like in its construction: "estás culpando a la persona equivocada". I moved about a year ago and it was so tumultuous that there are some habits that I had that fell by the wayside. Visiting this forum is one of those things. But I'll be around a bit more. What I really loved about Tomisimo was the dictionary. It was different from others, and just outstanding. Good night! |

Yeah, the dictionary and the translator were pretty good.
Hopefully Tomísimo will be able to bring them back.
