Comodín

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 18, 2009

comodín (masculine noun (el)) — joker, catch-all, all-purpose word, wild card, useful gadget, useful pretext. Look up comodín in the dictionary

Algunos juegos de cartas tienen un comodín que puedes utilizar cuando quieras.
Some card games have a wild card that you can use whenever you want.

¿Me podéis dar unos ejemplos del uso de la palabra? Entiendo el significado "joker" pero los otros me confunden.

De la RAE
Quote:
1. m. En algunos juegos de naipes, carta que se puede aplicar a cualquier suerte favorable. entendido
2.
m. Cosa que se hace servir para fines diversos, según conviene a quien la usa. entendido
3. m. Pretexto habitual y poco justificado. no lo entiendo (useful pretext?)

I'm not sure about the meaning of your sentence, Lou Ann... but in any case, I think "está" should be "es".

El único comodín en nuestros planes de viaje es el tiempo.

Malila - I wanted to say something to the effect of: "The only wildcard in our travel plans is the weather."

Still trying to work out ser & estar.......... (sigh.....)

Are you using "wild card" as an unpredictable factor?

In that case "comodín" is not a good choice... "comodín" is something that can change to one's convenience, so one determines how it changes (not the case with the weather).

Your sentence would sound better like: "Lo único impredecible en nuestros planes de viaje es el clima/el tiempo."

Ahhh!! Thanks for clarifying that, Malila - because in English we would definitely be able to use the word "wildcard" in that context. Cool distinction!!
