I understand that "lo" in "lo restes" refers to "tiempo", but I'm not sure what the author means when she says "lo restes de alguna actividad como..."

Does it simply mean that you should not watch TV or use your mobile when training your brain?

Thank you,

She seems to be saying that these types of activities will adversely affect the effectiveness of the training. The next advice she shares lists the activities your brain should be subjected to instead.

I agree with Rusty.
Since the author writes the way she would speak, she often depends on the context to be understood.
She could have written: "Lo ideal sería que restes tiempo de actividades como ver la televisión o usar el móvil y lo inviertas en ejercitar tu cerebro", and this "lo" would be immediately related to "tiempo".
Spanish is flexible like that, so most native speakers will know what she means, but her style could be neater.
