Confused by this use of "suponer"
I have the passage below, and the bold sentence translates as "Nina, several steps behind her father, did not take her eyes off Ferrán, for whom it took considerable effort to contain his laughter." I don't understand why the verb "suponer" is used here though.
"Federico escrutaba a los muchachos con un gesto serio, mirándolos a través del humo del cigarrillo que llevaba en los labios. Ana se había echado a un lado y esperaba ansiosa que el señor Federico expresara su opinión. Nina, varios pasos detrás de su padre, no retiraba la mirada de Ferrán, al cual le suponía un considerable esfuerzo contener la risa. —¿Así que ustedes son los amigos de Ana? —preguntó sin mirar a ninguno en concreto, pero mirándolos a todos a la vez. —Así es, señor —contestó Pascal, que encabezaba el grupo y estaba preparado para hacer una demostración de su mejor retórica. Seguro de sí mismo, se sujetaba las solapas de la chaqueta y esperaba el mejor momento—. Me llamo Pascal Dubois, a su servicio." |

If you take a look at the Spanish dictionary, you will find that "suponer" is not only to consider something true, but also to mean, in the sense that something implies a particular result.
Your sentence is saying that the situation is so funny, that Ferrán is finding very hard not to laugh. - Hacer el edificio con mejores materiales supone un costo mayor. Making the building with better materials implies a bigger cost. - La inversión supone unas finanzas más sanas para la empresa. The investment means healthier finances for the company. - El cambio climático supone más riesgo de huracanes en esta temporada. Climate change implies a bigger risk of hurricanes during this season.
