Taking a taxi
Hola amigos. Espero que algunos de ustedes son hablantes nativos. Tengo una pregunta...
What is the most common translation for "take" when referring to taking a taxi, or a train? Tomar? Coger? Llevar? Muchas gracias! |

Quote:
Never "llevar"; that means to carry something from a place to another. "Coger" and "tomar" are used depending on the region. In Spain "coger" is used more often and in many countries of Latin America "tomar" is preferred.

Thanks for the kind reply! I'm happy that I found this forum.
I'll use tomar. I'm teaching ESL to a group of about 18, and the majority are from Mexico; although, some are from Central and South American countries. |

Sometimes coger has sexual implications, but not in all Spanish-speaking countries. It's perfectly OK to use coger as in coger un taxi in coastal Columbia, but not in Argentina.
Such differences are common in Spanish (chicha, chucha, bicho concha are examples are words that are fine in some countries and dicey in others) Come to think about it in English we have similar differences. Fanny in OK in the USA, but in Britain ...
