The medication I've been given is not enough to relieve the pain.

La ayuda internacional no es suficiente para paliar la hambruna.
The international aid is not enough to alleviate the famine.

This is what I hear from people........

Voy a paliar la nieve antes que se frise.

(I am going to shovel the snow before it gets frozen).

I was beginning to doubt the fact that paliar means something else. I guess paliar is used because shovel = pala = shoveling = paliar.

Crotalito.......la palabra pailar no existe.

@Elaina: The word you hear is "palear", which is to work with a shovel.
Many speakers (wrongly) tend to pronounce the diphtong "ia" for verbs that end with "-ear".

@Bob: wrong use of "paliar". One uses this for trying to mitigate negative effects of phenomena we can't control (disasters, diseases, political/economic/social problems...), but not for people themselves.


Se puede alejar a la gente empalagosa simplemente ignorándola. No dejes que te moleste.

Para paliar la crisis económica la gente rica debería compartir la fortuna con las personas menas bendecidas.

+++No sabía que se debe seguir a usar el subjuntivo en la cláusula segunda, muchas gracias.

Claro que sí ya tengo que usar la nueva palabra alejar que me has enseñado
Cuídate del ladrón por corriendo como el viento muy lejos de él. También siempre lleva una arma para alegarlo, como una pistola eléctrica.
