En este caso preguntar por significa ask about.
¿Es común usar preguntar por en este caso?

To a foreigner pedir por sounds bad because pedir means to ask for. Therefore pedir por sounds like ask for for. That's sound redundant to me.
I read your post, I have a suggestion about your post.

The word should to goes in pass.

Regards.
