Time concerning en punto?

Is it common to remove the morning, afternoon, night part of the time when you add en punto?

So for instance: It is 6:00 p.m. sharp! is listed as Son las seis en punto!

I've see this in a few different books now and was wondering if it is intentional, and something you would only use if they knew the a.m./p.m.

Edit: Also I see Es a eso de la una for About 1:00, and A eso de las dos de la tarde for About 2:00 p.m. Why is this?
