Lavar or Lavarnos

Hi,

I was asked to translate "We have to wash our hands".

Can someone help me understand why it needs to be :
Tenemos que lavarnos las manos. In stead of: Tenemos que lavar los manos?

I thought when the sentense has "to wash" in it you could also use "lavar".
