Re-reading what I wrote about the independence of the USA, I have some doubts. I wrote:

This document [the Declaration of Independence of the Thirteen Colonies] has a great importance in American history, since it had a great consequence: the United States independence.

(Corrections are welcome, by the way ).

But my question are:

Should I write "it had a great consequence: the Thirteen Colonies independence", or perhaps: "...consequence: the United States formation", instead?

When did appear the name of the United States of America for the first time? in the Declaration of Independence of the Thirteen Colonies? I see that the Thirteen Colonies became the United States of America, and in the document the words "United States of America" are written. How was this name chosen?

Would you mind elighten me?

Thank you in advance.

All your choices are OK. My wording sounds better, but unfortunately I cannot tell you why.It probably has something to do with the possesive.

How was this name chosen?I don't know this, but I assume that, having no longer considering themselves as colonies, state became the new term they chose. To me there's very little monarchical about the word state.

Would you mind elighten me?

Thank you in advance.

From Wikipedia:

<< In 1507, German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller produced a world map on which he named the lands of the Western Hemisphere "America" after Italian explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. The former British colonies first used the country's modern name in the Declaration of Independence, the "unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America" adopted by the "Representatives of the united States of America" on July 4, 1776. On November 15, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, which states, "The Stile of this Confederacy shall be 'The United States of America.'" The Franco-American treaties of 1778 used "United States of North America", but from July 11, 1778, "United States of America" was used on the country's bills of exchange, and it has been the official name ever since.>>

Ok, thank you very much.

And I should say that I had to say "Would you mind enlightening me?". This is something that I always forget.

One more correction:
"when did appear the name of the United States of America for the first
time."
When did the name The United States of America first appear?

Back again with this sentence, I don't like very much the words in bold. I've been thinking of changing it and say:

...has a great importance (...), since it had an important consequence...

But I don't like it either, because I find repetition in both sentences:

great importance - great consequence
great importance - important consequence

I can't think of a good alternative here. May you help me?

Thanks.

The document looms large in the history of the United States.

The Declaration of Independece is a very imortant document in the history of the United State.

The Declatation of Indendence is an essential element of the history...
-----------------
It played a great role in the establishment of the United States as a
sovereign nation.

There are so many differenct ways of expressing this. Mine are just alternate suggestions. I used establishment instead of indepence to avoid redundency.
