Question Para entonces vs. por entonces

I have a vague idea that "para entonces" signifies a future deadline, while "por entonces" signifies something that happened in a past time.

Please check to see that my understanding is correct. Some examples of each phrase in sentences for me would be helpful!

It's more a matter of on the dot (para), synchronicity (para) and about (por), though por entonces is associated with context during long periods in the past.

(Probably Alec examples are more clear and better, but check the ones I give you and see if these make any sense for you...)
