Confused by this passage

So I have the passage below but am a bit confused as to what's going on. The first paragraph seems to make sense, but then I'm a bit clear what's happening in the second. The horse throws her to the ground, but then in the second paragraph, she whips the reins again. Is she still on the ground at this point, being dragged? Or did she get back on the horse and the text doesn't mention that?

Also, I'm a bit unsure what is meant by "el caballo respondió exprimiendo sus musculadas patas". Is that to say the horse just flexed its muscles?

Nina never fell from the horse. She's just afraid of falling, but when she knew that the Gallego had plans for her, she preferred risking her life and got on the horse to run away.

As for "exprimir", in this context, it means that the horse "extracted" more speed and energy from his legs and kept galloping.
